I like to think of myself as a simple fellow. Not the type of simple that would fall for online scams or pyramid schemes. No, I mean simple in terms of my disposition. I am not a fussy person. It doesn’t take a lot of effort for me to be happy and I feel I can fit into most situations comfortably. I know a lot of people who are always stressed, always dealing with an ‘issue’ and have an extremely hard time just ‘being’. Some of these people hate being at home, hate being in their own company and hate silence. I am quite the opposite. In the words of Sizzla Kalonji, “Simplicity, we use to survive, many find it difficult because they ignorant and hype”.
I think I would be happy in most situations as long as I have certain ‘things’ at my disposal. These are the things I like:
I am not a foodie. I am greedy. I am what we call in Jamaica as ‘Craven’ (not the dictionary definition seen here). I eat a lot and I eat often. I am always ‘defending’ my food. It’s been this way since I was a child. My mother had a hard time feeding me because I would get through the groceries long before the end of the week. Once I got through the groceries, ‘dog nyam mi supper!’ Not much has changed over the years. I still eat a lot but now I am more selective in what I eat. I have been a vegetarian for more than a decade. Nowadays I enjoy eating tofu, fish and lasagna. I also eat a lot of legumes (chick peas, lentil and cranberry beans are some of my favorites) and vegetables (zucchini, eggplant, callaloo). I enjoy cooking and making my favorite juices. I come from a family of chefs, cooks and bakers. No wonder the kitchen is one of my favorite rooms in the house.
I love sports. I enjoy playing and watching sports. As a child, I played football, cricket, basketball and even volleyball. I represented my church (yeah I used to go to church) in football and basketball, and I represented my high school and department at University in basketball. So sports have been and still are a big part of my life. I don’t play as much sports as I used to. I try to get in a game or two of basketball on Fridays after work, but that’s about it. I guess life kind of got in the way and I don’t have as much free time any more. (That’s my excuse and I am sticking to it.) You could say that all of the energy and passion that I am saving by not playing sports as much any more as gone in to watching sports. I watch and follow football religiously (basketball and boxing to a lesser extent) and I say follow because majority of my social media life is dedicated to sports. That was my main reason for joining Twitter. It allows me to keep up to date with my sports, while interacting with fellow fans. My weekends are dedicated to football. From as early as 6:45 on a Saturday/Sunday morning, I am up watching the English Premier League. I am normally glued to my laptop and if I have to go on the road, there is Twitter or BBC radio.

Whenever I think about the importance of music in my life, I am always brought back to my childhood. It’s Sunday afternoon and my mother has just finished cooking the Sunday Dinner – Rice and Peas and Fried Chicken. The carrot juice and the vegetables are in the refrigerator chilling. Its relaxation time, and the best way for a single mother to relax is by putting on some music. Kenny Rogers, Skeeter Davis and Jim Reeves are some of her favorites. Years later they would become some of my favorites too, but for now it’s just background music as my mother relaxes.
Music has always been a constant in my life; I had ‘Walkmans‘ when they were popular. When those got outdated, I graduated to CD Players. I even made my own ‘sound system’, with the help of a neighbor. In another life I would have been a disc jockey or a music producer. As it is, I am just a huge music fan stuck in the 1990s. My life is consumed by music; I am listening to music as I write this. I have a ‘soft sleep mixtape’ that I listen before going to bed. I go to bed and wake up to music. Music takes me to and from work and is with me throughout the day. A great man once said, “One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain”.

I come from a family of sleepers. A part from our love for food, enjoying a good sleep is our main distinguishing trait. My family members will sleep so long and soundly that you will have to check on them from time to time to ensure they haven’t drifted off to the hereafter. I am not much different, I love to sleep. I didn’t appreciate sleeping until I got older; I always felt I was missing out on something. I finally realized what I was missing – sleep! I always say that not many things can rival a good sleep and I still maintain that view. Sleeping is not only good, it’s good for you. Sleeping allows your mind and body to rest and your cells to replenish themselves. It’s also a great way to deal with stress. The next time you are feeling stressed, depressed or angry, instead of taking your problems on social media, get some sleep. I am sure you will feel better when you awake. If you are still not feeling better, seek help or take it to the lord in prayer.

I don’t even need to explain why sex is on this list. Sex speaks for itself (or at least it should). Sex should be had every day and twice on Sundays if possible (Responsibly of course). Getting it in is not a sin. (Well maybe it is, but that’s for another blog post.) Just like the other items on my list, this is something that I not only enjoy but something I am good at. (So I have been told.) Like the previous item on this list, sex is also good for you. It also makes a great combination with other items on this list. I will allow you to figure out what the best positions combinations are. You can let me know in the comment section.
